Senior Research Lead - Generative AI (m/f/x) - Canva Austria

Join the team redefining how the world experiences design.

Servus, hey, g'day, mabuhay, kia ora, 你好, hallo, vítejte!

Thanks for stopping by. We know job hunting can be a little time consuming and you're probably keen to find out what's on offer, so we'll get straight to the point.

Where and how you can work

Our flagship campus is in Sydney, Australia but Austria is home to part of our European operations. And you have choice in where and how you work, we trust our Canvanauts to choose the balance that empowers them and their team to achieve their goals.

Fun fact, a big part of our Austrian operations is developing the AI product within Canva to help reimagine how artificial intelligence can be used in design. Pretty cool ha!

What you’d be doing in this role

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

At the moment, this role is focused on:

  • Driving the overall technical direction, strategic alignment, and engineering excellence in Vienna.
  • Collaborating with product leadership and other stakeholders to develop and maintain a long-term product roadmap.
  • Driving the adoption of best practices across the engineering teams, such as the code management and review process, quality assurance, deployment workflow, and agile software development practices.
  • Taking care of the goals and milestone planning of your team by ensuring well-defined, impactful goals and metrics are set and consistently achieved, as well as driving the bi-annual performance review process with your coachees.
  • Fostering a culture of high performance, innovation, and continuous learning while creating opportunities for growth and development within the engineering community.

You're probably a match if

  • You come from a strong engineering background with a degree (ideally a PhD) and industry experience in Machine Learning and related fields (Data, MLOps, etc.), ideally with a focus on Computer Vision.
  • You can showcase a deeper understanding of Machine Learning concepts such as LLMs, Diffusion Models, and Generative AI.
  • You are an experienced engineering manager, passionate about working in and leading teams of at least 20 engineers across multiple disciplines (Machine Learning, DevOps, Backend, Data, etc.).
  • You have experience in coaching and leading other engineering managers and leaders and growing your coachees into leadership positions.
  • You share a passion for leading from behind, enabling engineers to grow and develop their skill sets without micromanaging them.
  • You have experience working in high-growth environments where requirements can change quickly and on highly-scalable projects.
