About the team
Canva is seeking a Privacy and Product Counsel, who will be responsible primarily for advising our flourishing Marketing team. The role will report into the Lead Counsel, Product within the Privacy and Product Team and will support product managers and engineers across the business. You will play a key role in delivering our strategy to design anything and publish everywhere and launching the next generation of exciting Canva Products!
Challenged to look at the big picture to find innovative processes and product changes to drive product compliance in a fast-paced, growth focussed environment. You will be encouraged to understand not just what the law says, but also industry and enforcement trends. You’ll help Canva see around corners to prepare for upcoming regulatory changes and influence how the business responds to those changes.
You’ll work to ensure Canva’s products continue to delight our customers and meet our goals, whilst also keeping users safe and meeting community and regulator expectations.
What you'll do
- Work closely with the Marketing team to drive compliance goals and provide our community with marketing and tracking choices
- Advise on proposed advertising campaign strategies and approve advertising copy across a number of mediums to ensure compliance with applicable laws in Australia, and globally
- Assist with the assessment and resolution of data incidents (we have an on-call roster), advise on privacy, including through the completion of Privacy Impact Assessments, Jira tickets and queries to our privacy channel
- Provide training on privacy and marketing laws annually and on request or where a need is identified, as well as working on other privacy awareness initiatives;
- Work collaboratively with the broader legal team to draft terms and disclaimers for new product launches, special offers and in-product messaging
- Support the business to comply with app store/marketplace requirement, ensure terms of use are up-to-date to reflect new product rules
- Counsel on Australian Consumer Law matters, including marketing reviews and subscription and pricing changes
- Guide teams on Spam, Can-Spam and ePrivacy compliance, including email marketing and cookie laws globally
- Monitor the regulatory landscape on laws applicable to the risks associated with product launches, including privacy, spam, consumer protection and content moderation laws
- Be the eyes and ears for the legal team and refer out matters to other legal specialities where required, including employment, commercial and intellectual property specialists
- Advise on data processing agreements with vendors, due diligence and high risk Transfer Impact Assessments
- Partner with Data, Security, Product and Engineering groups to drive privacy goals forward with alignment and support
We'd love it if you had
- Relevant legal industry expertise, certified Information Privacy Professional or commitment to obtain certification within 3 months of joining.
- Significant experience at or for a rapidly growing technology company advising on privacy compliance.
- A strong understanding of key marketing and privacy regulations globally (e.g. GDPR, Data Protection Act (UK), ePrivacy Directive, Australian Privacy Principles, Can-Spam, CPRA, Spam Act, Australian Consumer Law).
- Experience advising on marketing copy and campaigns that are high volume, including adding disclaimers, ensuring claims can be substantiated, advising on puffery and generally across relevant case law and misleading advertising laws.
- Demonstrated experience navigating the world of “martech” and a strong background in supporting marketing stakeholders to plan, execute, and measure the effectiveness of marketing campaigns in compliance with legal obligations.
